As I'm sure you are aware, we are living in a very digital world.  As our world is changing, so is the workplace.  As many blue and white collar jobs are being shipped overseas, US employers are looking for innovative people who can work collaboratively to solve problems in new ways. Employers also want people who can make use of a wide variety of technology.  Thus, the need for 21st century skills.  What are 21st century skills? Check out the following resources.

Gone are the days where students sit quietly in orderly rows, working in mostly solitary fashion to complete school work using nothing but pencils, paper and textbooks.  In today's elementary classrooms, you will often find students sitting in groups, working with hands on manipulatives, and working cooperatively to complete assignments.  Many classrooms have digital tools, such as desktop computers, laptops, tablets and interactive whiteboards, among other things.  As teachers, we want to make use of these resources that always attract the interest of our students, but we aren't always sure how to use them in a way that makes sense in the classroom and doesn't create more work for us.  We want to prepare our students for life and work in our 21st century world, but aren't sure how to best use the digital tools available in a meaningful way.  Too often, technology is only used as a replacement for a pencil-typing reports or taking tests online that could just as easily be taken the traditional way.  We can't use technology merely as an expensive pencil replacement.
